This 10-week Step Into Volunteering free course is being held in two venues simultaneously which are Boston College, Skirbeck Road Campus, and Boston College Spalding Campus, and offers an insight into volunteering and voluntary organisations, helping you explore the different volunteer roles.

This free 10-week course wil start on Thursday 16th January 2025 and continues on each Thursday, finishing on Thursday 3rd April 2025.
Each course lasts for 3 hours and starts at 9:30am and finishes at 12:30pm

Introduction and complete enrolments, etc.
Develop knowledge of steps needed to create a plan for personal change or improvement, including setting goals. This includes self-awareness and assessment of their own strengths, whilst identifying a specific goal they have chosen to aim for. They will be able to review their own progress and identify how to adapt their chosen methods for future planning.
Role of the volunteer – what is a volunteer – role description. Types of organisations to volunteer. It will raise awareness of different occupational areas and widen the understanding of different areas, giving learners information which, they can use to make choices.
Reliability/time keeping/commitment. Rights and responsibilities. Understanding limitations of the role – not blurring lines/boundaries e.g. social media. Representing the organisation. Policies and procedures
Raise awareness of the importance of communication in the workplace and the expectation of standards of communication; the difference between effective and ineffective communication as well as methods of communication.
Responsibilities, introduce learners to health and safety in the workplace, including potential hazards and risks, common basic safety signs, safe practices, and protective equipment.
Allows learners to identify the value of confidence and self-esteem, what factors affect them and the effect on others’ perceptions of an individual.
Understand your own strengths and unique selling points. CV layout, content, dos and don’ts. What is an employer looking for? How to tailor your CV to meet specific job role or sectors. Writing a successful application, understanding job descriptions and personal specification.
Preparing for an interview, researching an organisation, understanding how to answer interview questions, interview clothing.
Preparing for interviews.
Enabling learners to have a basic understanding of stress and issues that can arise. Learners will also explore a range of stress management techniques including relaxation.
Also included through the course are guest speakers, LCVS local volunteering officer and an opportunity to learn how to navigate the Lincolnshire Volunteering Platform website.
