Voluntary Centre Services West Lindsey
Introduction to DBS
Lincolnshire Community and Voluntary Service (LCVS) is a registered umbrella body for the Disclosure and Barring Service and working together with Voluntary Centre Services, we can support you in getting DBS checks wherever you live in Lincolnshire.
What is DBS?
DBS stands for Disclosure and Barring Service. This was formally known as CRB (Criminal Records Bureau), and enables employers to review your criminal record as a means of assessing your suitability for employment, particularly in roles that involve working with children or vulnerable adults.
This check helps employers make informed decisions about whether you are an appropriate candidate for the position.
There are two types of DBS checks available being:
Standard DBS
This is a comprehensive examination of your criminal history that will show information regarding all previous and current convictions, cautions, reprimands, and final warnings stored in central police records. The only exceptions to this are protected convictions and cautions.
Enhanced DBS
This type of check involves reviewing both spent and unspent convictions, cautions, reprimands, and final warnings from central police records (excluding protected convictions and cautions), as well as relevant information from local police records that is deemed reasonably necessary for the job in question.
You can find out more about the Disclosure and Barring Service by following this link to the Government website.
Does my Voluntary/Paid Position Require a DBS Check?
Before an organisation approaches an individual for a DBS check, they are legally responsible for ensuring that they are entitled to ask that person to reveal their conviction history – whether they have any unspent convictions, cautions, reprimands or warnings.
Organisations must therefore carry out an assessment to identify if the role should be subject to a DBS check. This assessment should make sure that the role meets the requirements for a standard or enhanced DBS check and if the role is defined as regulated activity.
Guidance on how to identify if a DBS check is required can be found by following this link to the DBS page on the Government website or by contacting your local LCVS or VCS office.
You can also check whether a role is eligible for a DBS check by following this link to the interactive eligibility tool on the DBS page of the Government website.
Further guidance on DBS checks for volunteers can also be found by following this link to the NCVO website.
